City Heights City Overview

Centrally located in San Diego, City Heights is north of the Martin Luther King Freeway (State Route 94), with Interstates 15 and 805 on the west and 54th Street on the east. This ethnically diverse neighborhood is enjoying the benefits of a $550 million renaissance breathing new life into the community.
Recent projects that have been completed include the first alternative fuel station in the city, a new retail complex with some mixed-use developments, several newly expanded and improved basic education schools, a new "urban village" with a new library, a new police headquarter and a gymnasium, as well as a number of innovative uses of open spaces as parks. Also new to the community are an Imax theatre, a San Diego Community College District Continuing Education facility, a San Diego State University Community Center, and a transit plaza/San Diego Workforce Partnership career center that is expected to train over 10,000 people a year.
City Heights is a walkable neighborhood with many of the restaurants, businesses and shops near the main residential pockets. It is common to see pedestrians, cyclists and scooters throughout the neighborhood and surrounding communities. Centrally located within San Diego, City Heights has easy access to freeways, Mission Valley commercial centers and the downtown area. University Avenue, El Cajon Boulevard and Fairmount Avenue are the major thoroughfares.
Re-growth in the area is seeing a rise in school test scores, and students from Hoover High School are increasingly being accepted at highly accredited colleges and universities. City Heights is home to seven elementary schools (two opening in 2007) and two middle schools, all a part of the San Diego Unified School District.
