Nestled in the gently rolling hills of San Diego just east of I-15 is Scripps Ranch, one of the citys most affluent suburbs. Residents choose The Ranch for its excellent schools, family atmosphere and wide-open spaces.

The land was originally purchased in the 1890s by EW Scripps (founder of the powerful chain of Scripps newspapers) and his sister, Ellen Browning Scripps. He built a Mediterranean-style home and named it Miramar, after the Archduke Maximilian's castle in Trieste, Italy. Portions of the ranch can still be seen at the Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club.

Many of Scripps Ranchs community activities center on the family, with various sports leagues and Miramar Lake, a popular place for picnics, bike riding, jogging and fishing. Local produce and cuisine is available every Saturday at the Farmers Market, and at the Taste of the Ranch fundraiser held in February.

Families are attracted to this community due in part to its excellent schools. Scripps Ranch schools are a part of San Diego Unified, with school rankings hovering between the 80th and 90th percentiles. Nearby is Miramar College, offering courses to the community at large; within the ranch is Alliant International Universitys 60-acre campus.

The majority of homes in Scripps Ranch are comprised of middle-class and upper-middle-class modern homes, many within master-planned communities. Real estate prices are favorable: currently, one-bedroom condos start in the low $200s and two-bedrooms in the low $300s. Detached houses can be found as low as the high-$400s, with prices ranging to nearly $2 million.
