Pacific Beach Real Estate
The coastal town
of Pacific Beach is adjacent to Mission Bay and is located just south of La
Jolla, ten miles north of San Diego. During the 1960s, when Mission Bay was
being developed as a recreational center, PB was in danger of being overbuilt.
Local residents passed a 30-ft height limit proposition in 1972, and PB was
downzoned for density. As a result, Pacific Beach has kept its small town,
casual beach atmosphere to this day. Home to 40,000 residents, with the
youngest demographic in San Diego County, PB is a terrific choice for families
and young professionals.
Several public
projects, including the Promenade shopping center and Sea Coast Square, have
improved the area in the past twenty years. Older beach cottages built in the
1950s have been renovated or torn down and replaced with new luxury homes,
apartment buildings, and condominium complexes. The Los Altos subdivision of
PB, with its ranch and Spanish-style houses, is the highest point in the area.
Homes in Los Altos offer spectacular views of the Bay and the Pacific Ocean, as
well as proximity to Kate Sessions Park. North Pacific Beach, which is in close
proximity to La Jolla, has many of PB’s newest and largest homes showcasing
Mediterranean and Spanish styling on larger lots. Home prices are still low
compared with neighboring La Jolla, with detached houses beginning in the high
$500,000s. Condominiums also represent a great value in PB, which remains one
of San Diego’s most popular neighborhoods with its great schools, restaurants,
parks, beaches, and vibrant nightlife.
