Solana Beach Erosion to Get Relief

The House of Representatives passed the ‘Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act‘ (WIIN) on Thursday, which will address public safety issues such as the bluff erosion in Encinitas and Solana Beach.

According to Congressman Darrell Issa, this act may help to fund projects such as the Coastal Storm Damage Reduction, a plan crafted to address beach erosion by the US Army Corps of Engineers last April. The project aims to reduce erosion and shoreline narrowing to reduce safety risks to recreational beach-goers and property owners along the beach.

This would involve the construction of a 50-foot-wide protective berm in Encinitas and a 150-foot-wide protective berm in Solana Beach along the shoreline, according to the US Army Corps of Engineers. The estimated construction cost of the berms is over $30 million, with periodic maintenance estimated at about $134 million over a 50-year period.
