On the eastern border of the City of San Diego, at the edge of Lake Murray and Mission Trails Regional Park, is the small community of San Carlos. San Carlos real estate primarily includes ranch-style homes built in the 1960s and 1970s, with quiet neighborhoods that attract families. Currently condos can be found from the low $200,000s, and homes begin in the low $400,000s.

San Carlos lies on the eastern edge of San Diego and is bounded by Del Cerro and Navajo to the west, Fletcher Hills and El Cajon to the east, and Santee and La Mesa to the north and south.

Nearby Mission Trails Regional Park is the largest urban park in the U.S., encompassing some 6,000 acres. It is seven times larger than Central Park in New York City. Here its easy to find picnic spots, baseball fields, tennis courts and other facilities. Within the park is the manmade reservoir Lake Murray, with its paved trails that encircle the lake and are ideal for walking, biking and jogging. On certain days fishing is permitted, and the lake yields bluegill, catfish, bass and trout. There is also a well-established golf course that borders the lake with views of Cowles Mountain from each fairway.

Cowles Mountain, also part of the Mission Trails Park, is the highest point within San Diego city limits. There are numerous hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails on the mountain. The mile and a half hike to the top provides an excellent view of San Diego, Mexico and the Pacific Ocean.

Nearby Grossmont Center and Parkway Plaza provide mall shopping and there are numerous small shopping areas that serve the area. San Carlos schools are part of the San Diego City School District, ranking up to the 90th percentile in the state.
